Zawa Zawa: Treasured Art Works of Ashley Wood (Japanese Edition)
First he draws a sketch with a thick black marker. Then he scans the sketch and draws it digitally. Then he prints it out on a large canvas and does the oil painting on top of the print-out. After scanning the oil painting, he adjusts the details digitally. He does this several times until he feels the art work is finished. This combination of oil painting and digital drawing is the foundation of his iconic style and is respected from many artists around the world.

Zawa-zawa is a stunning new art book by renowned Australian artist Ashley Wood, and his first art book published in Japan (PIE Books). The volume features a huge collection of the artist’s best works, almost 400 pieces spread across 240 pages and gives a great comprehensive overview of Ashley Wood’s prolific portfolio. The artist’s foreword for the book is reproduced verbatim below : “I have for many years enjoyed and been inspired by many Japanese artists, their history and work have defined and instructed the path of many artists outside of their home country, from the early influence of the wooden prints to modern manga and anime. I’m no different, the visual culture of Japan has played a role in my artistic ideal from my first experience with manga such as Mighty Atom by Ozamu Tezuka to photographers such as Nobuyoshi Araki, inspiring and demanding to push and look deeper ! With this book, I feel a milestone has been reached, it’s hard to explain, but it’s special and it makes me feel closer to something I dearly love, the visual language of Japanese comics and art.” There were so many beautiful pieces in this book I had a hard time deciding which ones to showcase in this post. On a technical note the print size of the book isn’t as big as I wish, but that can be said of many other books. Highly recommended.
Fantastic
